Dear Member of the Young Israel/ SHAS Communities,

Please join us on Sunday, October 10 at 10:00  for our first Annual Yom Chesed. We will gather as a community and work in multi-generational groups as we fulfill our Jewish responsibility to help improve the lives of others.  By doing so we will both help those around us and strengthen the ties within our own community.  We hope that everyone who can will participate.

We are asking families to pre-register using the form below.  On the morning of October everyone will gather as a community at our shared building.

Please complete the registration form by October 1.  We expect projects to fill up quickly so register early.  Please encourage your YI/SHAS friends and family to be part of this special day.

Social Action Committee, Rabbi Cheses, Rabbi Soffer

   Projects:

Project #1: Fill a Basket: Captain:  Hana Berman

New Life Furniture Bank of MA collects high-quality gently-used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need.  We will be sorting and filling laundry baskets with the items collected by the families of SHAS.  These baskets will be given to clients who can’t afford to buy the small items needed to care for their apartment. We will also be putting together a basket of treats for the Sharon Police and Fire Departments who have watched over our community so attentively in the past few years.

Ages: All Ages

Number of participants: 6 families

Project #2: Sandwich Making for Evelyn House: Captain: Cheryl Harris

Evelyn House is a family shelter providing temporary housing for families with children of all ages. It is part of a family shelter system associated with Father Bill’s and  Main Spring House, providing temporary emergency housing until the families find more permanent housing. Guests may stay for a brief period of time or for  more extended stays. We will be making light lunches for the families living at the shelter.

Ages: All ages

Number of participants:  7 families

Project #3: Hope and Comfort: Captain: Rachel Klausner

Hope & Comfort is the only organization in Boston solely dedicated to addressing youth hygiene insecurity. The many requests for hygiene products we receive tell the story of thousands of youth without access to the essentials. Often, these young people are embarrassed to go to school and isolate themselves. Supplying items like soap and deodorant can help improve the health and self-esteem of a young person, giving them the confidence to succeed.  We will be making hygiene kits to be distributed to young people in need.

Ages: All ages

Number of participants: 10 families
