Yom Chesed 2022

Please join us on Sunday, November 6th at 10:00 am for our second Annual Yom Chesed. We will gather as a community and work in multi-generational groups as we fulfill our Jewish responsibility to help improve the lives of others.  By doing so we will both help those around us and strengthen the ties within our own community.  Last year’s program was very rewarding; we hope that even more people will be able to participate this year.

Please pre-register using the form below, by October 16th.  We expect projects to fill up quickly so register early.  Please encourage your YI/SHAS friends and family to be part of this special day.

Thank You,

YI Social Action Committee, Rabbi Cheses, Rabbi Soffer

Projects:

Project #1: Furniture Build:  Captain- Hana Berman

New Life Furniture Bank of MA (New Life) collects high-quality gently used furniture and household essentials that are then made available at no cost to individuals and families in need, and particularly for families transitioning out of homelessness who need help setting up their new apartments  They supply families with around 15 dressers each week.
Recently they had their first "furniture build", putting together dressers made from kits that need assembly.  We will be their second group to participate in this great project!  This activity will take place at their warehouse in Walpole at 102 Elm St.  Parking is in the upper lot off West St at the corner of West and Elm, separated from the lower lot (where the delivery bays are) by a gate.   A link that includes photos will be sent once activities are assigned.
Participants are asked to be at the warehouse by 9:45 so we can begin at 10:00.  They do not usually open on Sundays; staff and volunteers are coming in on their day off to accommodate our schedule so being on time is especially important.
In addition to completing this registration, prior to Nov. 6, you will need to complete a registration and waiver form for New Life for each individual participating.   The link will be sent to you once we finalize the lists for each activity.
Ages: 9* and up in groups of up to 2 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids
*This is lower than their usual minimum age due to the self-contained nature of the activity.

A donor to New Life has funded most of the cost for the kits.  It will cost us $25 per dresser, which we plan to cover with donations and sponsorships.
Number of participants: 15 groups

Project #2: Hope and Comfort: Captain - Rachel Klausner and Elise Broderson

Hope & Comfort is the only organization in Boston solely dedicated to addressing youth hygiene insecurity. The many requests for hygiene products they receive tell the story of thousands of youth without access to the essentials. Often, these young people are embarrassed to go to school and isolate themselves. Supplying items like soap and deodorant can help improve the health and self-esteem of a young person, giving them the confidence to succeed.  We will be making hygiene kits to be distributed to young people in need.
Ages: All ages
Number of participants: 10 families

Project #3: Sandwich Making for MainSpring House and satellite shelters in Brockton: Captain - Cheryl Harris

Father Bill’s & MainSpring (FBMS) works to end and prevent homelessness in Southern Massachusetts with programs that provide emergency and permanent housing and help people obtain skills, jobs, housing, and services. FBMS helps people who are struggling with homelessness, or are at risk of homelessness, achieve self-sufficiency.  We will be making bag lunches and delivering them to three sites in Brockton.
Ages: All ages
Number of participants:  7 families
