Special meeting for the Young Israel

Sunday, June 14, 2015 27 Sivan 5775

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

There will be special shul meetings at Young Israel of Sharon on the evening of June 14, beginning at 6:00p.m., to cover multiple important and timely topics.  Please make every effort to have at least one adult member from each household attend, especially for the first portion of the evening.

Babysitting will be provided

The agenda will be as follows:

Special Meeting #1:
6:00 – 7:30 Changes to the Articles of Organization, the Constitution, and the By-Laws
7:30 – 7:45 Break

Special Meeting #2:
7:45 – 8:00 SHAS Construction Update
8:00 – 9:00 Rabbi Search Update

  SHAS Construction Update
In order to accommodate the new educational model being rolled out at SHAS, the school will be reconfiguring some classrooms over the summer.  This project will not change the footprint of the building nor will it diminish YI’s functional usage of the building (except during the summer construction). In fact, the changes should provide several enhancements for YI use of the space.
Rabbi Potok will provide a quick review of the proposed changes and timeline.

  Rabbi Search Update
The Rabbinical Search Committee will provide updates including results from the survey and focus groups, and the development of the job description.

Articles of Organization, the Constitution, and the By-Laws
The purpose of the meeting is to amend the Articles of Organization, the Constitution, and the By-Laws of the Young Israel of Sharon, Inc.

Why we are updating the constitution?

1. Recently the National Council of Young Israel has made changes to its charter. In order for YI Sharon to align with those changes, we must approve the proposed changes to our steering documents.

2. Our current steering documents, which were written more than 30 years ago, do not reflect how our shul has been operating. Also, they are not in line with the normative (and easier to read, understand, and follow) format that most non-profits currently use.

3. Our current steering documents, which were written more than 30 years ago, do not provide the necessary process for the selection of a new Rabbi.  Therefore the proposed changes enable a framework for the shul to define a usable process.

PDF copies of the current and proposed documents have been posted on YI web site. You can access the PDFs at yisharon.org. Go to the main menu > Shul Resources > Bylaws.  Note: you must be logged into your YI Sharon account to view this page.

Extensive work to research and update these documents has been graciously provided to our shul pro bono. We will not be able to address individual questions prior to the June 14th meeting. Please hold all questions and comments for discussion at the meeting on June 14 at which time there will be a review and explanation of the changes.  Also note that because of the expense and our interest in sustainability, hard copies of the documents will not be provided at the meeting – instead, we will be projecting the documents. Please bring your own printout if desired.

We look forward to seeing you on June 14th.
